My husband and I were recruited to the area during residency.   We both wanted to work in a smaller community where we could have a broad scope of practice, including hospitalist work. We were welcomed with open arms, and it has been so rewarding to serve a high-needs area.  We are also privileged to be part of a supportive medical community, with specialists who are always willing to help a colleague in need.  Speaking to other physicians in the area, we got a sense that the Quinte West region would be an ideal place to raise a family.  The lifestyle is relaxed and the low cost of living is a major bonus.  It was important for us to stay relatively close to family in Toronto and Cobourg.  We definitely take advantage of our easy highway 401 access.  Of course,  we also enjoy our proximity to Prince Edward County, Kingston and neighbouring communities.

As a physician, there are many opportunities for patient care.  The Family Health Team is obviously one of the primary locations, but there are also opportunities for hospitalist work, emergency department shifts, surgical assists and other family medicine organizations.  I’ve even been working with one of the local pharmacies to offer walk-in services to the area, which will hopefully help fill a gap in patient care in the region.  The overwhelming community support of the hospital was also a huge factor, and I find that my patients are very grateful for the services I provide.  As a father, Quinte West offers great outdoor activities for families with nearby beaches, provincial parks, apple orchards, golf courses and even a ski hill. The city’s recruitment contract also offers a great financial incentive, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have some great help from local real estate agents and mortgage brokers.

I have had the pleasure of working in nearly all the ED’s in our LHIN and many ED’s across the province.  I choose to keep Trenton Memorial Hospital as my home base because we have such great team that works so well together. We are big enough that we get to see good volumes and reasonably high acuity but we are small enough that the people I work with are like my second family.

I chose the area using several criteria.  The climate – a high number of sunny days, reasonable temperatures, and low pollution.  The location – on the 401, close to Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.  The financials – affordable real estate, and the ability to join a FHO.  I was lucky to find good schools, balance my home and work life, and buy quality food from local farmers. Also, the city has been very helpful in my business efforts.

It was an easy decision to start working as a physician in the city of Quinte West in 2014.

When I started working, I felt the warm hospitality and great collegiality with everyone I met.

The physicians, nurses and staff here all support each other and I feel very fortunate to be part of this team.

The quality of life in this caring community is second to none and its proximity to larger urban areas makes it the perfect place to live and work.

Quinte West offers a great variety of social, educational, cultural and recreational activities and experiences.  I am proud to call it home!

I came to Trenton (Quinte West) initially because I was getting out of the military and had friends that lived here.  I stayed because of the small town atmosphere that provides plenty of outdoor activities, and the proximity to nice restaurants, wineries and such.  It is very convenient to travel to Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and New York.

What convinced me to practice in Quinte West was the variety of work. When I started I did inpatient hospitalist work, ER and Anaesthesia as well as office practice.  It is hard to get bored when you are doing a bit of everything!
